Bone broth may not sound particularly exciting or mouthwatering, but what if I told you that almost every excellent soup or sauce you've ever tasted most likely has a base of broth or stock? Not only does bone broth add depth to stews, soups, rice, and beans (or almost anything, really), but it can also be delicious and served straight in a mug. It’s packed with nutrients and is a budget-friendly food made from scraps you might normally throw away.

When Crawford was a baby, we were struggling financially, but I wanted to be a thrifty housekeeper, avoiding any food waste while ensuring we were filling our bellies with nutrient-dense meals, not just empty calories. That's when I discovered that broths are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, collagen, gelatin, and amino acids. Not only can they stretch meals, but they can also boost your immune system, improve gut health, and enhance the appearance of your skin and hair.

I know what you're thinking. OK, this sounds great Cole, but what IS bone broth? The beauty of bone broth lies in its simplicity—leftover bones, whether already cooked or raw, can be boiled for several hours along with various leftover vegetables, herbs, and a splash of vinegar. The vinegar helps draw out even more nutrients from the bones, like calcium and magnesium, giving you an incredibly nutrient-rich liquid that’s easy to digest. Not only does this turn food scraps into something useful, but the long cooking process also breaks down the collagen in the bones into gelatin, which helps support healthy joints, skin, and gut lining. It’s a wonderful way to extract every ounce of goodness from ingredients you might have otherwise discarded!
